The mission of the Lorton Arts Foundation is to:
- Renovate, adaptively reuse and preserve the historic structures of the former Workhouse correctional facility.
- Create and grow an arts center and community that fosters a diverse offering of arts, arts education, entertainment and social experiences for people of all ages.
The Workhouse Arts Center is the principal program of The Lorton Arts Foundation. The Workhouse has 75 “resident” artists who work in studios in seven studio buildings and 50 associate artists who display their art in Vulcan Gallery the Workhouse Arts Center. All 125 artists have been juried into the program. The Workhouse offers hundreds of arts education classes and workshops in more than 15 artistic disciplines, supports two theatre ensembles (Studio 3 Theatre for Young Audiences and Workhouse Theatre) and hosts national and international juried art exhibitions that rotate monthly.
As a nonprofit organization The Lorton Arts Foundation relies on philanthropic support from the community – individuals, corporations and foundations – to sustain and grow the programs at the Workhouse. Contributions to The Lorton Arts Foundation directly support the nonprofit mission and enhance the artistic offerings at the Workhouse Arts Center.
