Art, in one form or another, has been with me all of my life. Growing up I studied dance, took music and art lessons and did theatre work. While I chose music as my professional career path, I always dabbled in the visual arts, playing with fiber arts, photography, stained glass, macramé, needle work and countless other mediums. In the 1990s I began making jewelry. The need to make every part of a project my own led me to silversmithing, metalwork and finally lampworking. Once I started playing in fire with glass, I was a goner!
It takes passion, practice and patience to be a skilled glass artist. After a long and successful career as a music educator and choral director and I am lucky to now be able to devote my time to my new love…glass. I love the ways it glows and flows when molten. I love that I have the ability to turn a simple rod of glass into an intricate work of color and beauty. I love the process, the solitude of creation and the joy of sharing my work with others.
I have been lucky to study with some of the best glass beadmakers in the country. I am invigorated by people who share this same passion for life, nature, creativity and art.
Kathryn Lagassey lives, works and creates art and music in the Northern Virginia area.
Retiring after 32 years of teaching music for Fairfax County Public Schools has allowed her the opportunity to follow her creative passion for glass bead making and jewelry design.
When not teaching music to her private students she can be found on the torch in her studio at the Lorton Glasshouse.
In addition to her art endeavors Kathryn is an avid gardener, sailor and explorer.
