Joe St. Germain is a professional scenic designer and scenic artist, and has worked in theatre for forty eight years. He holds an MFA in theatre production. In college and university, he taught scenic and lighting design, scene painting, and the technical aspects of theatre production, and has designed some sixty shows, both in academic and professional venues. He left teaching as an associate professor with tenure.
He attended the famed Polakov Studio in New York City, practicing the professional skills of scenic and lighting design, and scenic arts. For eight and a half years he worked as a full time scenic artist and carpenter at National Scenery Studios, and was the Charge Scenic Artist there for two years. He then became a free-lance designer and scenic artist. His designs have been seen in Summer stock,at two universities as guest artist, and off-Broadway. As a scenic artist,his painted scenery has been seen both on and off Broadway, on major national tours, and at regional theatre, opera and ballet productions throughout the country. Locally, his work has been seen in all of the major commercial venues,including the Kennedy Center, The National Theatre, Ford's Theatre, the Warner Theatre, as well as the Washington Opera and the National Ballet. He has also painted for several feature films and network television.
For the past two years he has occupied a design studio at Lorton, has designed a premier production at Rep Stage, and painted scenery for the pre-Broadway production of "West Side Story" at the National Theatre. He is currently developing class offerings and workshops to support the performing arts component of the Workhouse Arts Center.
