Statement

I am currently working primarily in encaustic, more specifically encaustic collage. I am drawn to this medium for many reasons, not the least of which is that this is
the most sensual of any medium I've ever worked with. Since encaustic is molten wax, there is, of course heat, there's the scent of the wax, the textural, tactile nature of the finished piece as well as the depth and luminosity that, for me, seems to be the magic of this medium.

I think on some level, with the encaustic collage series containing linear forms, I am in some way attempting to “order the chaos” that is everyday life. It's evident that I am drawn to stark, simple, shapes: squares, rectangles, circles, ovals, both for aesthetic and sentimental reasons. I have recently begun working on another encaustic series, not a square or rectangle in sight, it seems to be much more representational of that ever present and somewhat underappreciated “chaos” that is every day life.

Bio

I can't remember a point in my life when I wasn't creating or thinking about it, but it wasn't until I finished my graduate work in counseling and actually began working in the field that I finally realized how truly necessary it was for me. About 6 years ago, with the support and encouragement of my husband, I decided to take a break from the mental health field. Since then I have been painting full time.

I am self-taught, garnering knowledge and advice where I can; time, experience, life, trial and error – all wonderful teachers. The style of my work evolves and changes with my mood. Humor, emotion, and sometimes even a little playful sarcasm find their way into my work. I approach each piece with something of an idea, but rarely is the finished piece what I initially envisioned; it's taken time and much patience to realize that my best work happens when I “let go” and allow myself to play. When this happens the organic nature of each piece is revealed and with seemingly little guidance from me, each piece seems to actualize in my hands.
