I find and identify birds in the towering trees or dense undergrowth by the way they flit about or crawl around a branch or teeter on the ground. Many of my recent paintings are a celebration of my love of birds, the stranger the better. Some of my creations Mr. Peterson might recognize from his Field Guide to Eastern Birds, others have come fully formed from the end of my brush, never-before-seen species.

I tend towards a whimsical spirit in my work. I use layers and textures in addition to color and subject to provide a surprise or to amuse. Mixed media techniques provide an exciting arena which inspire me to be as innovative as possible with materials around me. I've even added needlework and cut pieces of aluminum cans to my creative endeavors. My early work as a self-taught artist was in printmaking, and its influence can be seen throughout my work. Over the years my art has evolved towards work on canvas, using paper as an under painting, acrylic paints and acrylic media and printmaking to texture.

Biography

I have a BA from Smith College, Northampton, MA.

I taught school and worked as a photographer/media specialist at the Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center, both jobs in Houston, TX.

I have just completed a three year artist in residence position at LibertyTown Arts Workshop in Fredericksburg, VA. In my studio there, I create, exhibit and teach acrylic painting, printmaking and mixed media techniques full time.
